Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.
This procedure can change and reduce the look of your protruding and bulging abdomen.
If diet and exercise has failed to get you back to your slim and well-toned body then you are definitely the best candidate for abdominoplasty. It removes the excess fat and tones the abdominal muscles. It is the best procedure by far for body contouring and reshaping.
This procedure is done under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon puts an incision just within or above the pubic area so that it is less visible after the surgery. Patients who have excess fat above the belly button will get a second incision around the navel area so that the excess fat can be pulled down and the excess skin is then removed and the position of the belly button remains the same. During this surgery, liposuction is also performed to thin down before, during and after the surgery. The overall time required for abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is approximately 2 to 4 hours* and partial abdominoplasty takes an hour or two.
Normally, the incision is made from one hip bone to the other just above the pubic area.
A second small incision is made to free the navel from the surrounding tissue. Next the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and lifted all the way up to reveal the rectus abdominis muscles. The fascia wall is then stitched together at the midline of the body to achieve a firmer abdominal wall and a narrow waist line. The skin flap is then pulled down and the extra skin is removed later the navel is stitched in place. Before stitching a temporary tube is inserted in to drain the excess fluid from the treated area which is being removed after three days of surgery. The treated area is then covered in bandages immediately after the surgery and the compression garment will be worn by the patient to minimize the swelling plus it gives additional tummy support whilst recovering. Intense exercise should be avoided for approximately 4 weeks*. Patient can go home after coming out of the effects of anesthesia, with post- operative instructions for keeping the wound clean for speedy recovery and good results. Patient is fully recovered in approximately 3 to 6 months*. Scar should not be exposed directly in the sun. Patient should always wear sun block in the treated area for best results. Patient can go back to work in 2 to 3 weeks*. Bed rest is not allowed. It is better to be mobile for speedy recovery.
